Ian Strand - Introduction

Why WEDB168?

My name is Ian Strand, and I am taking WEBD 168 to improve my existing artist website and to become more competent in web design. I currently struggle with using CSS and Javascript, and I am interested in taking all of the online web design classes that are available to me. I currently work full-time, so I find it important to have a guided environment - like a class - in order to make the time to improve my skillset. Though I do not intend to become a web developer, I am an independent artist, and I have found it important to have knowledge in many different fields of design. This gives me the means to help out other artists and organizations with a wide variety of media types.

About Me

I am a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, and I currently work at the La Jolla Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. I hold degrees in Art & Design and Screen Arts & Cultures, and I am proficient in French. Although I am focusing right now on gaining administrative work experience in an artistic environment, I would like to eventually go back to school and earn a graduate degree. I would also like to find work experience as a camera operator or cinematographer on a student or independent film. I currently make my own short videos and have some experience in event videography.

In my free time, I like to explore San Diego beaches and work on my photography portfolio. I still feel a bit new to the city, and so I am working on finding friends my age through classes, clubs, and volunteering. One of my favorite activities undergone this year was the San Diego International Film Festival. There, I helped coordinate the event photographers and was able to also add to my own photography portfolio!

Previous Experience

I have taken two courses in web design - one in introductory HTML and CSS, and the other using Processing.org in order to create art through coding.

• Webpage Design and Development
I have created now two (portfolio) websites for myself
• Web Creation Tools
I have some experience using Dreamweaver and a great deal more experience using Wordpress. I have used several different web hosting sites, such as MDDHosting.
• Programming Languages
I am fairly experienced with HTML, and slightly less experienced using CSS and Javascript. I have been using Processing for several years, but mostly for fun.
• Digital Imagining / Graphic Design
I am skilled at using the Adobe Suite, and have experience making graphic designs for a company in Shenzhen (called Rolling Design).
• Drawing Programs
Generally I prefer to use Adobe Photoshop. I have access to a drawing tablet, but usually I use this to clean up the scanned images from my on-paper drawings.
• Designs for Print
I have had one of my graphic design projects printed for sale - a greeting card. Right now, I am helping design the flyers for spring events at the Athenaeum.
